A process produces a dialdehyde. In the process, a 1,4-diol, 1,5-diol, or 1,6-diol is allowed to react with oxygen in the presence of (i) a ruthenium catalyst or of (ii) a metallic catalyst and water to yield a corresponding dialdehyde. A reaction is performed, for example, under neutral or acidic conditions. Water may be added to a reaction system, or a reaction may be performed without removing water out of the reaction system, which water is by-produced during the reaction. The reaction system includes, for example, about 0.01 to 10 moles of water relative to 1 mole of the material diol. The invented process can produce, for example, o-phthalaldehyde from o-benzenedimethanol in a high yield. Thus, a 1,4-diol, 1,5-diol, or 1,6-diol can be oxidized with oxygen to efficiently yield a corresponding dialdehyde.
