    A dual catalysis strategy via carboxylate species featuring weak nucleophilicity and basicity is used for the direct carbonylative polymerization of various epoxides for the production of original advanced polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) with high molecular weight and tunable functionalization. This study represents a rare example of PHAs synthesis using epoxides and carbon monoxide as raw materials.

    Various useful p-substituted phenol derivatives can be advantageously obtained by reacting a phenol compound with an organic halide selected from the group consisting of haloforms, tetrahalogenocarbons, and substituted or unsubstituted allyl halides in the presence of an alkali metal hydroxide using as catalyst immobilized cyclodextrin crosslinked through its hydroxy groups with a divalent hydrocarbyl group having free valences at both ends, optionally being substitued by a substituent selected from among an alkyl group, a halogen atom, and a hydroxy group, and optionally having at least one selected from the group constituting of an oxygen atom, a sulfur atom, and phenylene between at least part of adjacent carbon atoms. The used cyclodextrin catalyst can be recovered with ease and no loss, and can be repeatedly used for this process without reducing the yield and selectivity of the phenol derivative.

    The present invention provides substantially formaldehyde free aqueous thermosetting binder resins from resorcinol and cycloaliphatic dialdehydes, glutaraldehyde or their mixtures and urea which may be excluded or included up to amounts which deter hot wet tensile strength in the cured binder. The compositions provide binders that on a performance cost basis are equivalent to phenol formaldehyde resins but without the formaldehyde.
