O, wherein the metal catalyst is active for hydrogen exchange in water, to produce a deuterated acyl compound of Formula (3); (ii) reducing the compound of Formula (3) with a deuterated reducing agent to convert the acyl group to an alcohol group, and (iii) dehydrating the compound produced in step (ii) with a dehydrating agent to afford the vinylpyridine compound of Formula (1). The resulting deuterated vinylpyridine compounds are also described.
We describe the first effective H/D exchange reaction with acidic substrates in CDCl3 at room temperature. The particularly mild reaction conditions involved (solvent, base, and temperature) allow the chemoselective deuteration of ketones over esters. An NMR study was conducted with the aim of rationalizing the results obtained in the presence of TBD as catalyst.

Metal-free alkylation of quinoxalinones with aryl alkyl ketones
The first metal-free method for alkylation of quinoxalinones using cheap and stable aryl alkyl ketones as nucleophilic alkylation reagents is reported. This strategy greatly broadens the application channels of aryl alkyl ketones through carbon–carbon bond activation. In addition, the protocol has the advantages of simple operation, broad substrate scope, and good functional group tolerance.
