  Alkyl sulfinates function as formal nucleophiles in Mannich-type reactions to give sulfonyl formamides, which are readily dehydrated to the corresponding sulfonylmethyl isonitriles. The efficient, two-step synthesis provides a general route to sulfonylmethyl isonitriles from readily available methyl sulfinates or thiols.
