蜕皮激素作用于人体能促进蛋白质的合成,排除体内的胆固醇,降血脂,抑制血糖上升等,民间用于风湿性关节炎。在蚕业上,可用于促使桑蚕龄期缩短,促进吐丝结茧;在养殖业中对虾、蟹的养殖也广泛运用;在化妆品中蜕皮激素作为特殊添加剂也被应用,能够防止皮肤干燥,使皮肤更加细嫩。蜕皮激素能影响昆虫从孵化的幼虫到成虫的全部发育阶段,因此它可控制或杀死农业害虫,现已被开发和应用于第3代农药之中;它对农作物的生理过程也有某些影响,在丰产助剂方面也具有很好的应用前景。
性质蜕皮激素是一种淡黄色结晶性粉末,无特殊气味,但吸湿性强,遇光后颜色逐渐变深。
成分蜕皮激素或蜕皮甾类激素、蜕皮类固醇是节肢动物的甾体激素,参与调控蜕皮、发育,并在较小程度上影响生殖。蜕皮激素包括蜕皮酮、20-羟基蜕皮酮和2-脱氧蜕皮酮等,这些化合物通常由食源性胆固醇转化而来,通过细胞色素P450中的万圣节基因家族酶催化生成。许多植物中常含有植物蜕皮类固醇,作为毒素或拒食剂来对抗植食性昆虫。
应用蜕皮激素作用于人体能促进胶原蛋白合成、抗心律不齐、抗疲劳;促进细胞生长、刺激真皮细胞分裂,排除体内的胆固醇;降血脂,抑制血糖上升;通经活络,除湿镇痛等。此外,它还是天然的抗癌制剂。自1976年露水草蜕皮激素问世以来,已研制出不定期片剂、针剂和膏剂。民间用于风湿性关节炎,治疗不同症状的风湿及关节炎患者有较好疗效;其有效成分20-羟基蜕皮甾酮经临床研究证明具有直接降血糖作用,对Ⅱ型糖尿病总有效率为84%,对改善糖尿病患者的“三多一少”症状尤为明显。

化学性质蜕皮激素是一种白色结晶粉末,易溶于乙醇,略溶于丙酮,微溶于热水、乙酸乙酯和氯仿,几乎不溶于乙醚。它来源于漏芦、牛膝、珍珠露水草(Cyanotis arachnoidea)以及巴西人参(Pfaffia glomerata)。
用途β-蜕皮激素具有促进胶原蛋白合成、抗心律不齐和抗疲劳的作用;在昆虫生长、发育、细胞扩增和凋亡中发挥关键作用,通过调控基因表达来调节蜕皮和变态。
