  This disclosure provides a family of compounds that absorb and fluoresce in the short wave infrared region (SWIR, optionally 1000 nm to 1300 nm), including hydrophilic compounds that exhibit absorption and emission spectral profiles in aqueous solutions substantially similar to those observed in organic solvents such as methanol or DMSO. The compounds can be chemically linked to biomolecules including proteins, nucleic acids, and therapeutic small molecules. The compounds are useful for imaging in a variety of medical, biological and diagnostic applications, including SWIR in vivo imaging of regions of interest within a mammal.

  A piezoelectric crystal element and a sensor utilizing the same are presented for use in a sensor device for identifying at least one foreign material from environment. The crystal element comprises at least one crystal resonator in the form of a inverted mesa structure, which has a membrane-like region and has a certain resonance frequency value. A surface region of the crystal resonator is modified by reactive molecules of a kind capable of interacting with the foreign material to yield a reaction product that effects a change in the resonance frequency of the crystal resonator from said certain resonance frequency value. This change is indicative of the identity and quantity of the foreign material.

  Mixed esters of pentaerythritol and the like with at least two different 3-alkylthiopropionic acids are provided. Each acid from which the ester is prepared has a different alkyl group. This facilitates tailoring the mixed ester for use as a stabilizer which is especially compatible with a particular polymer resin material. Preferably, each 3-alkylthiopropionic acid is prepared by a direct addition reaction between an alkylmercaptan and acrylic acid or an alkali metal salt thereof, the reaction being carried out by heating the reactants in the presence of an aqueous alkaline solution.
