    A novel Rh(I)-catalyzed approach to synthesizing functionalized (E,Z) dienal compounds has been developed via tandem transformation where a stereoselective hydrogen transfer follows a propargyl Claisen rearrangement. Z-Stereochemistry of the first double bond suggests the involvement of a six-membered cyclic intermediate whereas the E-stereochemistry of the second double bond stems from the subsequent protodemetallation step giving an (E,Z)-dienal. The reaction may be represented by the following sequence.

    A compound of formula (I): wherein: R 1 is —SR 10 , —O—C(O)—R 11 , —NR 12 R 13 , where R 10 is a C 1-8 -alkyl group or a phenyl group unsubstituted or substituted by a C 1-4 -alkyl group, R 11 is a thiophenenyl, furanyl or pyrrolyl group, R 12 is H or a C 1-4 -alkyl group and R 13 is a C 1-8 -alkyl group or a phenyl group unsubstituted or substituted by a C 1-4 -alkyl group; R 2 is H or a C 1-4 -alkyl group; R 3 and R 4 are independently H or C 1-4 -alkyl groups; R 5 and R 6 are independently H, OH or OR 14 , or taken together are ═O, where R 14 is a protecting group; R 7 is H or a C 1-4 -alkyl group; and, R 8 is H, R 9 is OH and R 15 is H, or R 15 is H and R 8 and R 9 taken together are —O—, or R 9 is OH and R 8 and R 15 taken together form a bond; and, R 18 and R 19 are both H, or R 18 and R 19 taken together form a bond, or a plant physiologically acceptable salt thereof is useful for inhibiting 9-cis-epoxycarotenoid dioxygenase (NCED) in a plant or seed and is therefore useful for regulating ABA biosynthesis in the plant or seed.

    Embodiments of the present disclosure describe diapocarotenoid plant growth regulators represented by formula (I): R-A-R (I) or a precursor, salt, solvate, stereoisomer or polymorph thereof; wherein R is a monovalent carbonyl moiety selected from the group consisting of aldehydes, ethers, diethers, carboxylic acids, alcohols, and ester carboxylates and A is a bivalent polyene represented by the bivalent moiety -(CRa=CRb)x- wherein x is the number of double bonds in polyene moiety A, and Ra and Rb are, independently, hydrogen, a hydrocarbon, or an alkoxy group, and composition of the diapocarotenoid plant growth regulators in an agronomically acceptable carrier. Methods of regulating plant growth including promoting root development, increasing nutrient uptake, enhancing resistance to abiotic stress factors, invigorating plant growth, increasing plant yield, and increasing plant biomass by applying at least one diapocarotenoid plant growth regulator to a seed, plant propagation material, plant or plant growth medium are also described.
