化学性质

苯并吡喃又称为色烯（chromene），与吡喃一样，也有两种异构体：α-色烯 和 γ-色烯。这两种化合物本身并不重要，但它们的某些衍生物却非常重要。例如，色烯的羰基衍生物——苯并-α-吡喃酮和苯并-γ-吡喃酮就存在于许多天然化合物中。

维生素E属于色烯的二氢化物——色满（chroman）的衍生物，是一类含有八个成员的维生素总称。由于这类化合物分子中含有酚羟基，并且活性与生殖功能有关，因此又称它们为生育酚（tocopherols）。这八种生育酚中以α-生育酚的活性最强，作为药物使用的是其醋酸酯，习惯上称为维生素E，其化学名称为2,5,7,8-四甲基-2-(4,8,12-三甲基十三烷基)-6-色满醇醋酸酯。

天然的维生素E都为右旋体，而合成品则是外消旋体。维生素E具有较强的还原性，并且还可作为其他药物的抗氧剂使用。
