Oxidative ozonolysis of some 1-alkylcyclopentenes, 1-alkylcyclohexenes, and 1-methylcycloheptene gives keto acids (RCO(CH2)nCOOH) and by-product derived esters now identified as RCO(CH2)nCOO(CH2)nCOR. The mechanisms of formation of esters from zwitterion and carbonyl intermediates are discussed in terms of dimeric zwitterions. Cycloalkanones also present in the neutral by-product are attributed to alkylidenecycloalkanes.
