    Rhodium(I)-Catalyzed Carboxylation of Aryl- and Alkenylboronic Esters with CO2

    When the esters of arylboronic acids with 2,2-dimethylpropan-1,3-diol were treated with a catalytic amount of [Rh(OH)(cod)]2 in the presence of 1,3-bis(diphenylphosphino)propane and CsF in dioxane at 60 degrees C under carbon dioxide atmosphere, the benzoic acid derivatives were obtained in good yields. Reactions of alkenylboronic esters also proceeded under similar conditions to give alpha,beta-unsaturated carboxylic acids. As these boronic esters are now easily available through coupling or direct borylation reactions, this method would be a useful method for the preparation of various functionalized aryl- and alkenyl-carboxylic acids.

    Novel catalyst compositions for copolymerizing ethene and carbon monoxide, characterized in that they comprise: a) a compound of a Group VIII metal chosen from palladium, cobalt and nickel, b) an anion of an acid with a pKa of less than 6, and c) a bidentate ligand of the general formula R¹R²-M-R-M-R³R⁴, wherein M represents phosphorus, arsenic or antimony, R is a bivalent organic bridging group containing two or three carbon atoms in the bridge and R¹, R², R³ and R⁴ represent hydro­carbon groups which may or may not be substituted with polar groups, on the understanding that at least one hydrogen atom in at least one of the groups R¹, R², R³ and R⁴ is substituted with a polar substituent.

    Process for the preparation of polymers, characterized in that a mixture of carbon monoxide and one or more olefini­cally unsaturated organic compounds is polymerized by using a catalyst composition based upon a) a palladium compound, b) a bidentate ligand of the general formula R¹R²-M-R-M-R³R⁴ wherein M represents phosphorus, arsenic or antimony, R¹, R², R³ and R⁴ represent hydrocarbyl groups which may or may not be substituted with polar groups and R represents a bivalent organic bridging group containing at least two carbon atoms in the bridge, and c) a halide of tin or germanium, on the understanding that the presence of this halide is not compulsory when the composition contains a palladium halide.

    1. Novel catalyst compositions characterized in that they are based upon: a) a palladium compound, b) a quaternary phosphonium salt of an acid with a pKa of less than 2, with the proviso that the acid is not a hydrohalogenic acid or a mixture of such a salt and acid, and c) either a phosphorus bidentate ligand of the general formula R¹R²-P-R-P-R³R⁴, wherein R¹, R², R³ and R⁴ are hydrocarbyl groups which may or may not be substituted with polar groups and R represents a bivalent organic bridging group containing at least two carbon atoms in the bridge, or a nitrogen bidentate ligand of the general formula wherein X and Y are similar or dissimilar bridging groups, each containing three or four atoms in the bridge at least two of which are carbon atoms.
