Described herein is an asymmetric synthesis of a functionalized 1,2,3-trisubstituted cyclopentane building block, derivatives of which are commonly found in numerous natural products. Key steps include a Lewis acid-mediated cyclobutane ring opening, a diastereoselective chlorination, and a Favorskii rearrangement.
