A convenient new synthesis of the two pheromone components of the tomato pest Tuta absoluta in high overall yields and high stereoselectivity (30% yield, E,Z,Z 97% for the major compound and 23% yield, E,Z 99% for the minor component) is reported. The approaches compare favorably with others previously described.

Pure Z or E γ-iodoalkenes were prepared by a ring opening-elimination tandem reaction of erythro or threo secondary tetrahydrofurfurylicacetates with Me3SiCl/NaI. Applications to the synthesis of pheromones of Musca domestica and of Orgyia pseudotsugata are reported.

Defying conventional wisdom: Ionicliquids (ILs) with long, unsaturated alkyl appendages (see top structure) defy established trends that link long ion‐bound alkyl groups to higher melting points. The new ILs are also less viscous than a saturated standard (see bottom structure) at the same temperature.
