The synthesis and characterisation of four polyfluorinated monoepoxides is described. These fluoroepoxy monomers were cationically polymerised either neat or as mixtures with diglycidylether of bisphenol-A using the initiator system (CH3CH2)(3)Al/H2O (2/1) or the photoinitiator Ph2I+, PF6-. Contact angle measurements indicated that, in favourable cases, the fluorinated epoxide monomer surface segregated at low loadings to give significant lowering of the surface free energy of photocured films of diglycidylether of bisphenol-A. The CoCl2-catalyzed reactions of fluorinated 1,2-oxi- and thiiranes with acylchlorides were studied. It was found that a regioselective heterocycle opening reaction resulted in two isomers having normal and abnormal structure in a ratio predetermined by the substituents in both the starting heterocycles and acylchlorides.

This invention provides a low cost technique for synthesizing cyclic trithiocarbonates by a simple one step process from epoxides that can be conducted under atmospheric pressure. This synthesis can be depicted as follows:
wherein R represents a moiety selected from the group consisting of alkyl groups and aryl groups, wherein R′ represents a moiety selected from the group consisting of alkyl groups, aryl groups, and hydrogen atoms, and wherein R″ represents a moiety selected from the group consisting of alkyl groups, aryl groups, and hydrogen atoms, wherein the R moiety and the R′ moiety can be bonded together to form a cyclic structure, with the proviso that R″ represents a hydrogen atom if R′ represents an alkyl group or an aryl group. In this process carbon disulfide and a thiocyanate salt, such as potassium thiocyanate, are reacted with the epoxide in an ionic liquid, such as 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([Bmim] PF

A catalyst component for use in the polymerization or copolymerization of olefin(s) is obtained by contacting the following components (1) to (4) with one another:
(1) a compound of the general formula Me¹R¹p(OR²)qX¹4-p-q where R¹ is a hydrocarbon radical having 1 to 24 carbon atoms, X¹ is a halogen atom, Me¹ is Zr, Ti or Hf, and n is 0 ≦ n ≦ 4;
(2) a compound of the general formula Me²R³m(OR⁴)nX²z-m-n where R² is a hydrocarbon radical having 1 to 24 carbon atoms, X² is a halogen atom, Me² is an element from Groups I to III in the Periodic Table, z is the valence of Me² and m is 0 ≦ m ≦ z;
(3) an organocyclic compound having two or more conjugated double bonds; and
(4) a modified organoaluminum compound containing Al-O-Al bond and with at least one branched-chain alkyl group being attached to aluminum atom.
