    Potential therapeutic antioxidants that combine the radical scavenging ability of myricetin and the lipophilic chain of vitamin E to effectively inhibit microsomal lipid peroxidation

    The flavonol myricetin, reacts with oxygen-centred galvinoxyl radicals 28 times faster than d-alpha-tocopherol (vitamin E), the main lipid-soluble antioxidant in biological membranes. Moreover, each myricetin molecule reduces twice as many such radicals as vitamin E. However, myricetin fails to protect vitamin E-deficient microsomes from lipid peroxidation as assessed by the formation of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS). Novel and potentially therapeutic antioxidants have been prepared that combine the radical-scavenging ability of a myricetin-like head group with a lipophilic chain similar to that of vitamin E. C-6-C-12 alkyl chains are attached to the A-ring of either a 3,3',4',5'-tetrahydroxyflavone or a 3,2',4',5'-tetrahydroxyflavone head group to give lipophilic flavonoids (Clog P = 4 to 10) that markedly inhibit iron-ADP catalysed oxidation of microsomal preparations. Orientation of the head group as well as total lipophilicity are important determinants of antioxidant efficacy. MM2 models indicate that our best straight chain 7-alkylflavonoids embed to the same depth in the membrane as vitamin E. The flavonoid head groups are prepared by aldol condensation followed by Algar-Flynn-Oyamada (AFO) oxidation or by Baker-Venkataraman re-arrangement. The alkyl tails are introduced by Suzuki or Negishi palladium-catalysed cross-coupling or by cross-metathesis catalysed by first generation Grubbs catalyst, which tolerate phenolic hydroxyl and ketone groups.   • Synthesis and Mesomorphic Properties of Rigid-Core Ionic Liquid Crystals

    Ionic liquid crystals combine the unique solvent properties of ionic liquids with self-organization found for liquid crystals. We report a detailed analysis of the structure-property relationship of a series of new imidazolium-based liquid crystals with an extended aromatic core. Investigated parameters include length and nature of the tails, the length of the rigid core, the lateral substitution pattern, and the nature of the counterion. Depending on the molecular structure, two mesophases were observed: a bilayered SmA(2) phase and the more common monolayered SmA phase, both strongly interdigitated. Most materials show mesophases stable to high temperatures. For some cases, crystallization could be suppressed, and room-temperature liquid crystalline phases were obtained. The mesomorphic properties of several mixtures of ionic liquid crystals were investigated. Many mixtures showed full miscibility and ideal mixing behavior; however, in some instances we observed, surprisingly, complete demixing of the component SmA phases. The ionic liquid crystals and mixtures presented have potential applications, due to their low melting temperatures, wide temperature ranges, and stability with extra ion-doping.

    Copolymers with alternative electron-donating and electron-withdrawing units can exhibit a low-band gap and can be used as the donor materials in polymer photovoltaic cells (PVs). This paper reports the synthesis of copolymers of electron-donating ethynylfluorene and electron-withdrawing 3,6-dithiophen-2-yl-2,5-dihydropyrrolo[3,4-c]pyyrole-1,4-dione (DPP) via the Pd-catalyzed Sonogashira coupling and their application in polymer PVs. Applying microwave irradiation during the Sonogashira coupling can shorten the polymerization time from several days to a couple of minutes and improve the molecular weight. These polymers have band gaps of about 1.85 eV. Their energy levels indicate that they can be used as the donor materials for polymer PVs. Polymer PVs were fabricated using these polymers as donors and [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) as acceptor. Applying the microwave irradiation during the Sonogashira coupling can significantly improve the photovoltaic performance of the polymer PVs. Power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 2.25% was achieved on polymer PVs under AM 1.5G illumination (100 mW cm(-2)). (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
