Methods, compositions, reagents, and systems that allow for the preparation and utilization of sulfonamide salt polymer electrolytes are disclosed herein. Methods and reagents to prepare sulfonamide salt monomers are also disclosed herein. The sulfonamide salt polymer electrolytes can be used as components in energy storage devices, conductive materials, electrochemical cells, gels, adhesives, and drug delivery vehicles.

Monomers having a C-B-A-B-C structure are disclosed, where A is a core of either trithiocarbonate and allyl sulfide, where B are linker units, and where C are end units. The end units may comprise acrylates, methacrylates, alcohol(s), amine(s), and alkynes, among others. The linker units may include an alkane, alkene, phenyl, diphenyl, or benzylic group, among others. Methods of synthesizing such compounds are also disclosed.

A vinyl ester resin is derived from the reaction of an unsaturated acid with an epoxy terminated polymer made from a dithio or a trithio initiator, and optionally from an epoxy resin. The vinyl ester resin can be blended with a miscible toughener and a diluent to provide a time stable system and subsequently crosslink to provide a composition with improved toughening properties.
