Assuming that the metabolism of benzotrichloride is similar to that of toluene, the investigators postulated that benzotrichloride is eliminated in the urine as hippuric acid, and proceeded to measure the background level of hippuric acid in a group of 10 untreated white rats. After noting that the normal hippuric acid content of the urine was 14-20 mg (no per volume or per weight measure as given), these same white rats were exposed to daily benzotrichloride vapors of 0.03 mg/1, 2 hours a day for 20 days. After the 20th day, the hippuric acid level in the urine of certain individuals reached 47 mg. ... One of the initial conversion products is sodium benzoic acid, which is converted to hippuric acid, and that metabolites other than hippuric may also be formed.
