A polyester resin (A) having branched chain, a reduction viscosity (ηsp/c) of not less than 0.7, and a Z average molecular weight (Mz) relative to standard polystyrene of not less than 250 × 10³ and not more than 800 × 10³, a polyester resin composition comprised of resin (A) and a polyester resin (B) without branched chain and having a reduction viscosity (ηsp/c) of not less than 0.7., and a polyester resin composition comprised of resin (A) and a polyester resin (C) having branched chain and a melting point lower than that of the polyester resin (A). The sealant made from the polyester resin (A), or the resin compositions of the present invention is superior in heat-sealing properties, flavor retention, and film moldability (extrusion processing characteristics), and is suitable for a sealant for paper and plastic food containers.

A multiply-branched aliphatic-aromatic polyester and a method for producing that polymer. The method comprises condensing Z¹ and Z² groups of a branching reactant having the general formula Z¹-Ar-(Z²)j. In this formula, j is 2 or 3 and Ar is an aryl or heteroaryl group having from 1 to 3, solitary or linked or fused, substituted or unsubstituted, five or six membered rings. One of Z¹ and Z² is a group having the general formula
in which R¹ is selected from the group consisting of hydroxy, chloro, bromo, monovalent alkoxide having from 1 to 6 carbons, and -O-(CH₂)d-OH, wherein d is an integer from 1 to 3; and the other is a group having the general formula
in which R² is a divalent alkyl group having from 1 to 6 carbon atoms, and g is an integer from 0 to 100.

Disclosed is a process for producing water-dispersible polyurethanes by forming an isocyanate-di-substituted prepolymer and reacting it with a chain extender. The prepolymer can be formed by reacting a diisocyanate with an ethylenically unsaturated precursor which is preferably formed by condensation polymerization of reactants including ethylenically unsaturated reactants and then sulfonating the ethylenic unsaturation of said polymeric precursor by reacting it with a sulfonating agent such as bisulfite, metabisulfite, or a mixture thereof.
