  The materials and methods are particularly useful in media for cell culturing but have other applications as well, such as in tissue engineering. The materials comprise at least one growth factor or other cell growth facilitating substance contained within a polymeric structure which can incorporate the substance and allow controlled release of the substance. Alginate materials are particularly useful as the polymeric structure. Another feature described herein is the above-described materials provided in a lyophilized (freeze-dried) form which greatly enhances their storage life.

  (EN) There is disclosed a method of making biocompatible capsules containing cells comprising the steps of suspending cells in an aqueous medium containing a pre-dialysed water soluble gum which has plural anionic moieties but is substantially protein free, forming the suspension into droplets containing the cells, subjecting the droplets to a solution of mutlivalent physiologically compatible cations to gel the droplets, encapsulating said cells, subjecting said gelled droplets to a polymer containing cationic groups which cross-link with said anionic groups to form a semi-permeable membrane and coating said semi-permeable membrane with a layer of said pre-dialysed water soluble gum.(FR) Un procédé de production de capsules biocompatibles contenant des cellules consiste d'abord à mettre des cellules en suspension dans un milieu aqueux qui contient une gomme hydrosoluble pré-dialysée. Cette gomme comporte diverses fractions anioniques mais pratiquement pas de protéines. On obtient ensuite une suspension de gouttelettes contenant des cellules soumises à une solution de cations multivalents physiologiquement compatibles, les gouttelettes sont encapsulées dans un gel puis exposées à un polymère contenant des groupes cationiques, lesquels, en étabilisant une réticulation avec les groupes anioniques forment une membrane semi-perméable. Cette dernière est ensuite recouverte d'une couche de gomme hydrosoluble pré-dialysée.
