Treatment of phenylcyclopropane with silver(I) acetate–iodine or thallium(I) acetate–iodine gives, as the major products, 1,3-disubstituted phenylpropanes resulting from cyclopropane ring opening, and in some cases, from solvolysis of intermediate iodo-acetates.
