    electron-rich derivative of SEGPhos and its application in Ru-catalyzed asymmetric hydrogenation reaction of β-ketoesters are reported. Up to 99.5% ee was achieved. Under solvent-free reaction conditions, acetoacetates could be reduced with good enantioselectivity and high efficiency; a TON of 20 000 was obtained within 3.5 h. The results obtained were comparable to those when SEGPhos was applied.

    Disclosed is a process of preparing an optically active β-hydroxycarboxylic acid derivative comprising asymmetrically hydrogenating a β-keto compound in the presence of a catalyst comprising a transition metal complex compound having a 2,3-bis(dialkylphosphino)pyrazine derivative as a ligand. The pyrazine derivative is preferably a quinoxaline derivative, and the transition metal is preferably ruthenium. Preferred examples of the quinoxaline derivative are (S,S)-2,3-bis(tert-butylmethylphosphino)quinoxaline, (R,R)-bis(tert-butylmethylphosphino)quinoxaline, (S,S)-bis(tert-adamantylmethylphosphino)quinoxaline, and (R,R)-bis(adamantylmethylphosphino)quinoxaline.

    Highly electron-donating bis(trialkylphosphine) TangPhos and its corresponding ruthenium complexes provided high enantioselectivities for the hydrogenation of β-keto esters. Up to 99.8% and 99.5% ee have been achieved in hydrogenation of β-alkyl and β-aryl substituted β-keto esters, respectively. Asymmetric hydrogenation of ethyl 4-chloro acetoacetate in 98.2% ee is also reported.

    complexes were highly efficient catalysts for asymmetric hydrogenation of β-aryl-substituted β-(acylamino)acrylates and β-aryl-substituted β-keto esters. The Ru-bisphosphinite catalysts can tolerate an E/Z mixture of β-aryl-substituted β-(acylamino)acrylates. These highly enantioselective hydrogenations provide a useful way to prepare β-aryl-substituted β-amino acids and β-hydroxyl acids.
