Gold-catalysed generation of diol equivalents from epoxides and their intramolecular reaction with C≡C bonds to generate bicyclic ketals is presented. This reaction essentially involves the formation of an acetonide, which subsequently cyclises on the alkyne intramolecularly under gold catalysis conditions.
