Treatment of several carbonyl compounds with excess strong base and diethyl phosphorochloridite results in formation of two carbon-phosphorus bonds at the alpha carbon. Oxidation of the immediate product with H2O2 affords the corresponding alpha,alpha-bisphosphonate in moderate to very good yields. (C) 2002 Published by Elsevier Science Ltd.
