    The present invention pertains to complexes comprising sterols and saponins. The complexes are capable of binding a genetic determinant including a polynucleotide. The complexes may further comprise a lipophilic moiety, optionally a lipophilic moiety comprising a contacting group and/or a targeting ligand, and/or a saccharide moiety. The complexes may further comprise an immunogenic determinant and/or an antigenic determinant and/or a medicament and/or a diagnostic compound. The complexes may in even further embodiments be encapsulated by an encapsulation agent including a biodegradable microsphere. The present invention also pertains to pharmaceutical compositions and methods of treatment of an individual by therapy and/or surgery, methods of cosmetic treatment, and diagnostic methods practised on the human or animal body.

    A process is described for the preparation f electrostatically-linked, aliphatic- or alicyclic-substituted anionic or cationic polysaccharide gels from readily available macroporous ionic polysaccharide chromatographic media, such as diethylaminoethyl (DEAE), quaternary aminoethyl (QAE) and sulfopropyl (SP) substituted polysaccharide gels. These novel gels are used for the isolation, recovery and purification of non-polar extractives using one or more extracting solvents from the group of lower alcohols, ketones, and water. The non-polar extractives may be alk(n)lyresorcinols, steroid, triterpenoid, cardiac glycosides and saponins, steryl ferulates and other phenolic acid conjugates, flavonoids, lipids, alcohol-soluble antimicrobials, prolamines or other alcohol-soluble proteolipid complexes.

    Improved methods and compositions for protecting plants or seeds from plant diseases are provided. The compositions comprise (and preferably consist essentially of) saponin, such as triterpene type saponins extracted from quinoa or quillaja. Compositions according to the invention may comprise (or consist essentially of) a quantity of a sapogenin compound, preferably a sapogenins selected from the group consisting of oleanolic acid, hederagenin, phytolaccinic acid, and quillaic acid. The methods comprise contacting the portion of the plant (e.g., foliage, shoot, etc.) to be treated with a disease-inhibiting or protective amount of the composition. The compositions can also be used to treat plant seeds or tubers prior to planting thereof, as well as soil adjacent a growing plant. The inventive compositions are particularly useful for the treatment, control and/or prevention of bacterial diseases. The saponins of the invention can be applied as liquids or dry particulates, and are especially suited for the treatment of tomato and potato plants and their respective seeds.
