  Additives for lubricating oils, especially automatic transmission fluids, are disclosed comprising a heterocyclic compound containing boron and of the formula wherein R is inorganic or organic and R₁ and R₂ are the same or different organic radicals, in admixture with or as the reaction product of reaction with an ester of a polyhydric alcohol. The boron-containing heterocyclic compound may contain sulfur. It may comprise the product of reacting together ammonia or a primary amine, an aliphatic or aromatic epoxide and a boric acid in a ratio of 1: 2: 1. Lubricating oils and transmission fluids containing these additives are also disclosed.

  Certain boron-containing, heterocyclic compounds are disclosed which impart extreme pressure, anti-wear and friction reducing properties to lubricating oils. Such lubricating oils are further provided with a hydrocarbon polysulfide derivative of 2, 5-dimercapto -1, 3, 4-thiodiazole as a copper corrosion inhibitor, or terephtalic acid as a lead corrosion inhibitor, or either an alkylated diphenyl amine, a bis (dithio-benzil) metal derivative, a sulfur bridged, bis hindered phenol or an alkyl or dialkyl diphenylamine as an oxidation inhibitor or a mixture thereof.

  The present invention provides a composition containing (a) a substantially nitrogen free dispersant derived from the reaction product of: (i) a polyalkenyl-substituted acylating agent; and (ii) a polyol; (b) a primary metal hydrocarbyl dithiophosphate; (c) an oil of lubricating viscosity; and (d) optionally a viscosity modifier, wherein the composition contains about 35 ppm or less of nitrogen derived from a substantially nitrogen free dispersant. The invention further provides a process for preparing the composition and its use.
