A novel approach to convert aldehydes into nitriles using NH3·H2O/FeCl2/NaI/Na2S2O8 has been developed. Both alkyl and aryl nitriles were obtained in good to excellent yields. Electron-withdrawing and electron-donating groups, such as fluoro, chloro, bromo, nitro, ester, cyano, trifluoromethyl and alkoxy were tolerated.
