A method is provided for making certain aryl onium salts of Group VIa elements useful as photoinitiators for polymerizing various organic materials. Reaction is effected between a compound of a Group VIa element, for example, an aryl or alkyl sulfide or a thiophenol or mercaptan and an aromatic iodonium salt in the presence of a copper compound catalyst or a copper compound-tertiary amine cocatalyst.
Onium salts of Group VIa elements which have an MF.sub.6.sup.- anion, where M is selected from P, As and Sb, have been found to be photoactive under ultraviolet light. These onium salts can be incorporated as cationic photoinitiators into a variety of cationically polymerizable materials when used in combination with propylene carbonate as an aryl sulfonium salt solvent mixture.
Onium salts of Group VIa elements having an MF.sub.6 -anion, where M is selected from P, As and Sb, have been found to be photo active under ultraviolet light. These onium salts can be employed as cationic photoinitiators when used with a variety of organic resins and cyclic organic compounds.
Disclosed are polyesters and polycarbonates of the formulae ##STR1## wherein X is an anion with weak nucleophilicity, A, B, and C represent the number of repeat monomer units, wherein C may be zero, R is selected from the group consisting of hydrocarbon groups and alkylene ether groups, and R" is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, nitro, amide, halide, trimethylsilyl, alkyl groups, and alkoxy groups. The compounds are suitable for use as polymerization initiators, particularly in applications wherein curable liquids are cured to solids. One specific embodiment of the invention is directed to a curable liquid developer composition comprising a colorant, a polymeric compound of the above formula, and a substantial amount of a curable liquid vehicle having a viscosity of no more than about 500 centipoise and a resistivity of no less than about 10.sup.8 ohm-cm.
