The icetexane-based diterpenes (-)-barbatusol, (+)-demethylsalvicanol, and (-)-brussonol were synthesized. Synthetic demethylsalvicanol was dimerized to produce (+)-grandione using aqueous Diels-Alder conditions.

A biomimetic synthesis of the triterpene (±)-perovskone was achieved featuring a remarkable polycyclization process in which three rings, four bonds, and five stereocenters were created in a single operation in 82% yield. Barbatusol, isolated from the Labiate Coleus barbatus Bentham, is shown to be a new phenolic diterpene with a rearranged abietane skeleton. Absolute configuration is established by hemisynthesis of barbatusol dimethyl-ether from the known carnosol. Barbatusol is endowed of biological activity.
