An additional amino-alkyl side chain makes the difference: A series of amino-functionalized analogs of marine diterpenoids were prepared by stereoselective total synthesis and characterized with respect to their antibiotic properties. While the phenolic intermediates showed activity only against Gram-positive bacteria, the amines proved to be active also against Gram-negative bacterial strains.
