Efficient greener methodology for the preparation of bio-based phase change materials from lipids

In the present work, a new, highly efficient and simple strategy has been developed for the synthesis of long chain esters from fatty acids and fatty alcohols as phase change materials. Equivalent amounts of the selected starting compounds were taken to the esterification reaction at 110 degrees C in a solventless medium. In order to catalyze the esterification reaction, non-hygroscopic triphenylphosphine-sulfur trioxide adduct was used (0.83 mmol%) which is an easily accessible compound. The relevant reaction was completed in a very short time (2 h) and under optimized esterification conditions, excellent conversion were reached. The targeted mono ester compounds (15 examples) were obtained in good to excellent yields even after a simple crystallization step (72-99%). Additionally, a catalyst reuse investigation and study covering the scale-up production of stearyl stearate was also carried out. The triphenylphosphine-sulfur trioxide catalyzed solvent free process can compete with existing processes and proved to be a cheaper, practical and environmentally-friendly method for the esterification of fatty acids and alcohols.

Bisurea gelling agents that impart a number of unexpected benefits within various gelled formulations and exhibit great versatility in terms of gelling capabilities for many types of solvents are provided. Such gelling agents should include pendant groups, such as sterically hindering alkyl groups attached to polyoxyalkylenated moieties that allow the gelling agent to be compatible with the target liquid system at elevated temperatures, while controlling and/or limiting the network formation and strength during the cooling cycle. The result is that a reliable, hard gel is formed that does not crash out of solution easily and that does not exhibit unwanted cracking or precipitating out within the final formulation. Alternatively, novel gelling agents having two urea groups but that are asymmetrical in configuration have been produced in order to provide the same control in temperature, compatibility, and efficiency. Final gelled formulations, such as antiperspirant sticks and other like consumer items, are provided as well within this invention.

There is provided a pigment surface treated with N-acylglycine hydroxyaluminum and/or N-acyl-N-methylglycine hydroxyaluminum, and a pigment dispersion which contains such surface treated pigment and a cosmetically acceptable oily material, and has an excellent dispersion stability and versatility (ease of dispersion and wide rage of usage).

Bridged polysilsesquioxane based sunscreens prepared as nanoparticles via oil/water microemulsion polymerization, sol-gel polymerizations, or a modified Stober process. Minimized leaching and decreased levels of photo-degradation were achieved with covalent incorporation, with bridged incorporation necessary to ensure isolation of the sunscreen and any photo-products from skin. SPF values of were found to be comparable to existing commercial sunscreens. Furthermore the bridged polysilsesquioxane based sunscreens can be classified as broad-spectrum, and rate from moderate to superior in terms of UVA protective ability.
