  A process for forming an ionizable composition, the process comprising: contacting, at a temperature in the range of 0-85°C, a composition comprising the functional group -(CF2CF2)n-SO2F, where n is 1 to 5, with a solution of an alkali metal salt, the pH of said solution not to exceed 13, for a period of time sufficient to obtain the degree of conversion desired to the alkali metal sulfonate form of the polymer.

  Coupling reactions of chlorofluoro- and perfluoroalkyl iodides R_f-I with R_f = ClCF₂CFCl(CF₂)₃CF₂-, ClCF₂CFClO(CF₂)₃CF₂-, ClCF₂CFCl-, (CF₃)₂CF- , (CF₃)₂CFCF₂CF₂- in the presence of a zinc/solvent system give dimers in good yields. Both homodimerizations (one iodide) and heterodimerizations (two different iodides) have been studied. The effect of temperature and solvent is shown. The zinc mediated dechlorination of vicinal chlorine atoms in the dimers afforded terminal alkenes and dienes.
