  Pravastatin is a HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor of the cholesterol biosynthesis. It exhibits well-pronounced tissue selectivity. According to the invention, the producing strain Streptomyces roseochromogenes, registered in the NBIMCC under Nº 8072, is cultivated under submerged conditions in a nutrient broth containing in % w/w: glucose from 1 to 3; yeast extract from 0.5 to 1.0; sodium chloride from 0.1 to 1.0; calcium carbonate from 0.05 to 0.5; glycerol from 1 to 5, under aerobic conditions at temperature of 26 - 30°C, pressure 0.5 bar and pH 7.0 - 7.5. The advantage of the method is the high degree of transformation of ML-236B (compactin) to pravastatin.
