    Breaking kamp: A catalytic route toward chiral α‐alkyl‐β‐ketoesters using the title reaction of α‐alkyl diazoester with aldehydes has been developed (see scheme). The reaction proceeds with high to excellent enantioselectivities and this methodology was applied to a concise two‐step synthesis of the natural pheromone sitophilate.

    Synthesis of sitophilate 6, the male-produced aggregation pheromone of the granary weevil, has been achieved with an overall yield of 46% from 1 in high enantiomeric and diastereomeric purity. From sitophilate, sitophilure 8, aggregation pheromone of the rice weevil and maize weevil, was prepared in a four-step synthesis without any racemization.

    The aggregation pheromone of the granary weevil Sitophilus granarius, (2S,3R)-1-ethylpropyl 3-hydroxy-2-methylpentanoate, has been synthesized in 63% total isolated yield and high chemical and enantiomeric purity (98% de, > 99% ee) from readily available methyl 3-oxopentanoate. A stereoselective ketone reduction followed by an ester hydrolysis, were the two key steps of the synthesis and were both performed by commercially available enzymes. (c) 2007 Elsevier Ltd.     An efficient synthesis of the 3-pentyl ester of 2S-methyl-3R-hydroxypentanoic acid (sitophilate) and its 2S,3S-, 2R,3R-, and 2R,3S-isomers has been carried out starting from the available 2R-methyl-3-butenyl acetate as sole monochiral precursor.
