In the presence of bis(benzonitrile) dichloropalladium and copper iodide, vinyl chlorides react rapidly in piperidine with terminal acetylenes to give conjugated enynes in high yields.

In the presence of tetrakis(triphenylphosphine)palladium, vinyl and arylhalides or triflates react very rapidly in piperidine or pyrrolidine with terminalalkynes to give conjugated enynes and aryl acetylenes in high yields.

A Palladium/imidazolium chloride system has been used to mediate the dimerization of terminal alkynes to enynes. The combination of 1 mol % Pd(OAc)(2) and 2 mol % IMes.HCl in the presence Of CS2CO3 as base shows high activity and high regio- and steroselectivity for the dimerization of aryl and aliphatic terminal alkynes to enynes.

Copper iodide and weakly ligated palladium complexes PdCl2(RCN)(2) (R = Ph, Me) catalyzed efficiently the coupling reaction of vinyl chlorides with 1-alkynes in the presence of piperidine to give the corresponding conjugated enynes in good to excellent yields. The reaction takes place rapidly and cleanly at room temperature. Application to the synthesis of terbinafine which exhibits strong antimycotic activity has been realized.
