    Four new and two known ether-soluble resin glycosides were isolated from popular sweet potato (the roots of Ipomoea batatas L. LAM., Kokei 14 go, Convolvulaceae) in Japan. Unlike ester-type dimers, batatins I and II, obtained from other sweet potato (Ipomoea batabas var. batatas), the glycosides were tetra or pentasaccharide monomers in which the sugar moieties are partially acylated by organic acids and combine with the aglycone, jalapinolic acid, to form a macrocyclic ester.

    Four compounds named orizabin I, II, III and IV, which are ether-soluble and correspond to the so-called resin glycoside “jalapin” were isolated, for the first time, from the root of Ipomoea orizabensis (Convoi vul aceae). Unlike the presumption advocated by Mannich and Schumann for the ether-insoluble glycoside “convoivulin” from I. purgá, all of them were respectively a monomer of hydroxyfatty acid

  • Novel acylated lipo-oligosaccharides from the tubers of Ipomoea batatas

    Nine new lipo-oligosaccharides, batatosides H-P, were isolated from the tubers of Ipomoea batatas (Convolvulaceae). Spectral and chemical methods allowed to characterize them as tetra- or penta-saccharides that form a macrolactone with the aglycone, (11S)-hydroxyhexadecanoic acid (jalapinolic acid), the absolute configuration of which was established by Mosher's method. Batatosides L and O showed a weak inhibitory effect on the growth of Hep-2 cells, while the others proved to be inactive. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

    [GRAPHICS]Oxidation of tetradecanoic and hexadecanoic acids by cytochrome P450(Biol) (CYP107H1) produces mainly the 11-, 12-, and 13-hydroxy C-14 fatty acids and the 11- to 15-hydroxy C-16 fatty acids, respectively. In contrast to previous reports, terminal hydroxylation is not observed. The enantiospecificity of fatty acid hydroxylation by P450(Biol) was also determined, and the enzyme was shown to be moderately selective for production of the (R)-alcohols.
