    An operationally simple continuous flow generator of "dark" singlet oxygen has been developed. The singlet oxygen was efficiently reacted with several chemical traps to give the corresponding oxygenated products in high yields. The developed "dark" singlet oxygen generator has been successfully applied in the synthesis of the antimalarial drug artemisinin.

    Described is a new method for the efficient in situ production of singlet oxygen in a simple continuous flow photochemical reactor. The extremely large interfacial area generated by running the biphasic mixture in a narrow channel at a high flow rate ensures high throughput as well as fast and efficient oxidation of various alkenes, 1,3-dienes, and thioethers on a preparative scale.

    A convenient 3-step synthesis of (R)-7-hydroxycarvone (2) has been developed starting from (S)-α-pinene (7), using photooxygenation, oxidation, and fragmentation reactions. An improved synthesis of epoxy alcohol 6 and an unusual Ti(OiPr)4 catalyzed hydroxy epoxide to keto alcohol rearrangement are also described.

  • Photooxidation of Olefins under Oxygen in Platinum(II) Complex-Loaded Mesoporous Molecular Sieves

    Cyclometalated platinum(II) complex has been successfully incorporated into the (3-aminopropyl) triethoxysilane-modified channels of ordered mesoporous silica SBA-15 that has large pore hexagonal channels. Studies on the O-1(2) generation conclusively demonstrates that the olefins in the nano-channels of SBA-15 can be enriched 8 times higher than those in the homogeneous solution as the diffusion quantum yield of singlet oxygen (O-1(2)) is assumed to be unit. The platinum( II) complex loaded in the channel of SBA-15 is stable, and the photosensitized oxidation occurs efficiently. No obvious degradation and leaching of photosensitizers is observed even after 10 runs. Only a simple filtration is needed for the recycled use of the expensive noble metal catalysts. This versatile system is a good example of photochemical reactions occurring in the mesoporous silica molecular sieve. SBA-15 not only provides a support for the photosensitizer, but also acts as a nano-reactor to facilitate the photooxidation.

    We present herein for the first time the use of the [Cu(Xantphos)(neoc)]BF4 as a photocatalyst for the selective C–H allylic oxygenation of cycloalkenes into the corresponding allylic hydroperoxides or alcohols in the presence of molecular oxygen.
