  Fluoroalkyl iodides are an important class of compounds used in the preparation of large numbers of fluoro-organo and fluoro-organometallic derivatives. We report the synthesis of several SF5-containing fluoroalkyl iodides derived from an improved synthesis of SF5CF2CF2I. They are: SF5CF2CF2CH2CH2I, SF5CF2CF2CF2CF2I, SF5CF2CF2(CH2CH2)2I, SF5CF2CF2CH=CHI/isomer and SF5CF2CF2CHFCF2I/isomer. In addition

  A series of reactions between SF5CF2CF2I and SF5(CF2)(4)I with F2C=CF2 was carried out in an effort to find the most effective methods for chain-extension. Also, for the first time, SF5(CF2)(8)I and SF5(CF2)(10) have been prepared and isolated. The reaction conditions for the addition of H2C=CH2 were also investigated. A determination of the crystal structure of the SF5(CF2)(4)CH2CH2I has been carried out: the crystal system is monoclinic, with space group P2(1)/n and a = 23.465(5) Angstrom; b = 6.0971(12) Angstrom; c = 44.892(9) Angstrom; alpha = 90degrees; beta = 99.38(3)degrees; gamma = 90degrees; Z = 20.
