  The preparation of 3 alpha,16 beta-dihydroxyaphidicolane and its [17,18-H-2(2)]-derivative from aphidicolin is described. This substrate was hydroxylated at C-6 and C-7 by Cephalosporium aphidicola. No [H-2]-label was detected in the aphidicolin produced by the fermentation, indicating that 18-hydroxylation cannot occur in the presence of a 3 alpha-hydroxyl group.
