This invention relates to an icing inhibitor for hydrocarbon fuels contaminated with water said icing inhibitor comprising a polyethyleneglycol monoalkyl ether of the generic formula: R-(OCH2.CH2)n-OH wherein R is a C4-C6 alkyl group and n has a value from 3 to 8, said inhibitor being substantially free of components immiscible with said fuel and an aviation fuel system comprising a hydrocarbon fuel contaminated with water, and an ice inhibiting amount of a polyethyleneglycol monoalkyl ether which is preferably triethyleneglycol mono-n-butyl ether.

A convenient approach to the synthesis of oligo(ethyleneglycols) under phase transfer conditions is described. Oligo(ethyleneglycols) (x = 7-12) are obtained in excellent yields and high purity via modular, bi-directional elongation of readily available ethyleneglycol bis-tosylates.
