synthetic feasibility of the oxidative cleavage proposed in the biogenesis of transtaganolides/basiliolides is studied. The pyran‐2‐one cycle aromaticity controls the oxidative cleavage toward undesired positions in assays with coumarins. The use of a caffeate model has overcome this problem, and has allowed the synthesis of an analogue of the pyran‐2‐one key in the biogenesis.
