    A family of fluorinated gemini surfactants derived from perfluoropinacol has been synthesized as novel F-19 magnetic resonance imaging (F-19 MRI) agents. These fluorinated surfactants with 12 symmetric fluorine atoms and one singlet F-19 MR peak can be conveniently prepared from perfluoropinacol and oligo(ethylene glycols) on multi-gram scales. Solubility, hydrophilicity (log P), and critical micelle concentration (CMC) measurements of these fluorinated surfactants indicated that high aqueous solubility can be achieved by introducing oligo(ethylene glycols) with appropriate length into perfluoropinacol, i.e., manipulating the fluorine content (F%). One of these fluorinated surfactants with high aqueous solubility and excellent F-19 MR properties has been identified by F-19 MRI phantom experiments as a promising F-19 MRI agent.     Mono-dispersed poly(ethylene glycols) (PEGs) are of great value in the development of biopharmaceuticals. However, tedious synthesis limits the availability of mono-dispersed PEGs. To address this issue, a fluorous synthesis of mono-dispersed PEGs, discretely PEGylated surfactants and F-19 magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) agents has been developed. During the synthesis, both fluorous and normal phase silica gel-based solid-phase extractions were successfully employed to simplify the purifications. This synthesis provided an easy access to valuable mono-dispersed PEGs and related molecules for biomedical application on multi-gram scales. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
