The invention provides novel compounds and compositions of Formulas I and II, as well as methods of using them. The compounds can be used, for example, to quantify an amount of double stranded DNA in a sample subjected to nucleic acid amplification, or for real time monitoring of a nucleic acid amplification reaction. The compounds can be provided in a kit, for example, with other reagents and instructions for using the compounds and reagents.

A mild method for the synthesis of 2-quinolinones via hydroarylation of N-aryl alkynamides is reported. While traditional methods have relied on the use of strong Brønsted or Lewis acids, this report describes the development of mild reaction conditions that yield 2-quinolinones in good to excellent yield using a commercially available gold catalyst. Substrates bearing a variety of functional groups
oxidative cyclocarbonylation of N-monosubstituted-2-vinylanilines constitutes a simple, direct, and selective method for the synthesis of 2(1H)-quinolinones. The reaction conditions are attractive in terms of environmental considerations and operational simplicity. 2(1H)-Quinolinones with a variety of functional groups were prepared in up to 97% yield.
Novel 1,2-dihydro-2-oxoquinol-4-ylalkanoic acid derivatives bearing a variety of substituents on the quinoline nucleus but including, at position 1, an aromatic radical linked directly or through a C.sub.1-4 -alkylene or a C.sub.2-4 -alkenylene radical. Representative compounds of the invention are 1-(3,4-dichlorobenzyl)-3-methyl-1,2-dihydro-2-oxoquinol-4-ylacetic acid and .alpha.-(1-benzyl-1,2-dihydro-2-oxoquinol-4-yl)propionic acid. The compounds possess anti-inflammatory or analgesic properties, or are inhibitors of the enzyme aldose reductase.
