  Synthesis of the immunologically important and structurally unusual phosphodisaccharide repeat unit (Galp1,4 beta-Manp-1 alpha-phosphate) of the lipophosphoglycan cell surface GPI molecule of the protozoan parasite Leishmania donovani has been carried out using lactose as the starting material.
