    1,3-Diketones were synthesized from alpha,beta-unsaturated ketones by treatment with acid chlorides and Et(2)Zn in the presence of RhCl(PPh(3))3. This is a very simple and extremely chemoselective reaction to give the adduct at the alpha-position of alpha,beta-unsaturated ketones.

    The present invention refers to aryl beta diketones of the formula (I) wherein Y, R1, R2 and R3 have the meaning R1 is selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, C1-C4 alkyl, hydroxyl, methoxy, CF3 and F; R2 is selected from the group consisting of methyl and ethyl; R3 is selected from the group consisting of methyl and ethyl; and Y is a bivalent residue selected from the group consisting of —C(O)—; —CH2═CH2—C(O)—; —CRIRII—C(O)—, wherein RI and RII are independently selected from hydrogen and methyl; and —CHRIII—CHRIV—C(O)—, wherein RIII and RIV are independently selected from hydrogen and methyl with the proviso, that RIII═RIV are hydrogen or either RIII or RIV is methyl.
