  A total synthesis of the 7,9,7′,9′-tetra-cis(Z) isomer of lycopene, also known as ‘prolycopene’, produced as the major carotenoid pigment in fruits of the tangerine tomato Lycopersicon esculentum (‘Tangella’) is described.
