Thermolysis of 22 7-silanorbornadienes (18 of them are new) forming silylene R2Si and the corresponding benzene derivatives is shown to be a two step reaction enhanced by higher stability of the intermediate biradical. Evidence for the latter is given by trapping and ESR experiments.
