Reaction of the cycloundecatriene, humulene, with hypobromous acid gives a monocyclic and a tricyclic product. The latter has been converted into the cyclononadiene, caryophyllene, and the cycloundecatriene ring system has been regenerated from the tricycle in a variety of reactions.
