A practical and simple method that allows preparation of azides from alcohols is described. The process involves oxyphosphonium-type activation and it is based upon the use of nicotinoyl azide (NCA), a cheap and easily accessible azide ion source.

A simple and efficient one-pot method for the preparation of allyl azides fromallylalcohols using triphosgene and sodium azide is described. An application of cinnamyl azide for the synthesis of various Nl-cinnamyl azetidin-2-ones is also described.
Ï-Allylic azidation of allyl esters was performed with an amphiphilic polystyrene-poly(ethylene glycol) (PS-PEG) resin-supported phosphine-palladium complex in water under heterogeneous conditions to give allyl azides in good to high yields. The polymeric palladium catalyst can be readily recovered and recycled.
Palladium catalyzed reaction of allyl acetates with azide ion gives allylazides, which are readily converted into the corresponding primaryallylamines upon treatment with PPh3/NaOH.
