Barbatusol, isolated from the Labiate Coleus barbatus Bentham, is shown to be a new phenolic diterpene with a rearranged abietane skeleton. Absolute configuration is established by hemisynthesis of barbatusol dimethyl-ether from the known carnosol. Barbatusol is endowed of biological activity.
