-symmetric biaryldiphosphines comprising a fused ring system (dioxacycle) which has at least seven ring atoms and can be varied synthetically. The biaryldiphosphines can be used as ligands for preparing metal complexes useful as catalysts in organic synthesis, and the dioxacycles can be varied to optimize reaction with specific substrates.

A composition derived from the acid treatment of ashes obtained after heat treatment of selected plants or plant material is provided. Rhodium-catalyzed asymmetric synthesis of β-branched esters from allylic amines

Allylic amines are converted to chiral, β-branched esters under rhodium catalysis in the presence of alcohol nucleophiles. Allylic amines with aliphatic and aromatic vinylic substituents are converted to ester products with excellent enantioselectivities in all cases. Several alcohol nucleophiles have been utilized in the reaction including 1° and 2° derivatives.
A chain terpene alcohol having the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are the same or different and respectively represent hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl group is produced by oxidizing a chain unsaturated amine having the formula ##STR2## wherein R.sup.3 represents an alkyl group and heating the product for a thermal rearrangement to form a chain unsaturated hydroxylamine having the formula ##STR3## and then reducing the chain unsaturated hydroxylamine with hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst selected from the group consisting of iron family elements, copper family elements, oxides thereof and copper chromite.

Provided is citronellol, which has an elegant rosy fragrance and is extremely useful for fragrance impartation to aromatic articles. A mixture of an alkylamine and isoprene in a molar ratio of from 1:4 to 1:4.5 is subjected to telomerization at 80 to 100° C. for 2.5 to 3.5 hours in the presence of an alkyllithium catalyst and/or phenyllithium catalyst to obtain a nerylamine compound containing 2 to 10 wt % &agr;-nerylamine compound represented by general formula (4).

From this nerylamine compound, citronellol containing 2 to 10 wt % optically active 3,7-dimethyl-7-octenol is produced through the reaction steps of asymmetric isomerization, hydrolysis, and hydrogenation.
