  Abstract A new tetranortriterpenoid, nimocinol has been isolated from the undried winter leaves of Azadirachta indica. Its structure has been determined as 6α-hydroxyazadirone through comparison of its spectral data with those of related meliacins and chemical studies.

  Tetranortriterpenoids from Azadirachta indica A. Juss and Soymida febrifuga (Meliaceae), have been selectively oxidized to single major products which exhibit bioactivity higher than the parent compounds, comparable to that of azadirachtin A. The reaction proceeds to completion in less than 15 min and I min on being assisted by ultrasound and microwave irradiation, respectively. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

  Nimonol was obtained from the fresh green whole leaves of Azadirachta indica and its structure has been reassigned on the basis of COSY, NOESY and H-1 NMR spectral data. 6-Acetylnimonol was identified as 6-acetoxyazadirone and dihydronimonol was shown to be identical to isomeldenin. The mp and H-1 NMR spectra of 6-acetylnimocinol were markedly different from those of 6-acetoxyazadirone showing that nimocinol and nimonol have different structures. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd.
